Bread bakers in the Northern region say they will embark on a two-day strike beginning on Tuesday, August 24, 2021. The strike is expected to be followed by a peaceful demonstration in the regional capital, Tamale on Wednesday, August 25, 2021.
The strike, according to the bakers, is in reaction to increased prices of flour, sugar, yeast, butter and other break making products.
In a related development, in 2019 & 2020, bakers in Tamale expressed similar sentiments, to go on strike over the increasing price of flour.
According to them, within 2 to 3 weeks, there had been a 25% increase in the price of bread flour as well as sugar.
The bakers say they are not able to keep up with the rising cost of flour, hence the need for a sit-down strike, to draw the authorities and powers that be and their attention to the issue and trigger some sort of meeting with each other halfway.
