In addition, an anemic 13% promised a return to public spaces in the next several weeks if social distancing restrictions were eased. Nearly half—48%—said they would definitely forego public outings until they were entirely sure the outbreak is over.
The survey also asked what kind of activities respondents would be comfortable doing in the event that restrictions were lifted:
- 29% would go be okay going to a bar/restaurant
- 15% would get on a plane
- 13% are game for a “large event”
Notably more people feel comfortable going to work outside their home: 44% for those who aren’t currently employed and 57% for those who are, suggesting comfort levels grow with one’s familiarity with the workspace.
In terms of how much longer people think they can handle the financial burden of staying at home:
- 36% say the lockdown has already impacted them financially
- 41% think they can last a few more weeks or longer
- 17% say the lockdown will never impact them
Finally, Americans largely believe stay-at-home orders have helped, with 76% saying they have been effective, including 77% of Republicans and 75% of independents.
These numbers entirely reinforce that all those anti-lockdown agitators are on the fringes of society. According to Morning Consult, just 14% of voters think social distancing should end.
